My Presidential Candidate (Essay)
It’s been 6 years since we had our last national election. With these past years, according to our government, they’ve done their part as public officials but the public says that corruption is still the biggest problem of our nation. This year’s national election would be one of the greatest events of our country this year because this would be the first time that the COMELEC will conduct the Automated Election System. COMELEC assured the public that using this system, there will be no cheating for this upcoming election. But if the COMELEC were ready, let’s now have a look for the presidential candidates who are aspiring for the highest position in our land. Seven aspirants with different platforms and agendas, all of them were saying that what they want is change and economic improvement, but among these candidates I’ve already decided who would be my bet for the presidential seat. Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Conjuangco Aquino III, son of the great heroes late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and the late President Corazon Cojuangco – Aquino is my presidential aspirant bet. With all the problems, debts and shame that our country is facing right now, I still firmly believe that change in our government is still not impossible if the right person would get the highest position in our land. The hope in our country and justice would again arouse with the helping hands from the son of our heroes who truly leaved a lasting legacy that would remain in Filipinos hearts forever. I want him to be our leader because I know that his parents love for our country is the same with him and I firmly believe with his ads saying that he would not be corrupt unlike the other public officials. Contradicting with what I’m saying about Senator Noynoy is what I’ve observed with Senator Manuel “Manny” Villar, the aspirant who’s saying that anyone who is not poor or “mahirap” have no right to become the next president of our country is I think the worst candidate for this year.
I’d rather vote Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III than anyone else from the candidates because I know that he carries the love that came from his parents for our beloved Philippines. His parents duty is to serve our country, but what they did is more than that, what they gave are their whole lives for our country. I remembered when the late Senator Ninoy said that, “Filipinos are worth dying for”, and it was true, it was proven when he was killed at Manila International Airport, unity among Filipinos arouse and it was served as the start of the passion to have change in our government. 1980’s was a great decade for the Philippines because of the Aquinos, their strength became our strength and their dignity became our dignity and that precious love from the couple can still be felt through their son and daughters. With all these facts, I can say that the saying, “Like father like son”, would truly reign in our hearts as we approaches the election period. “Living for the Lord leaves a lasting legacy”, I’ve read this saying in Our Daily Bread, while I’m reading this, I remembered the times when the late President Cory are still suffering from Colon Cancer. This event truly amazed me when I realized that truly Filipinos do love her so much, she became an instrument for her colleagues to have a deeper relationship with God, and through her words of wisdom, many were inspired, because of her strength towards all the sufferings from her illness, again many were inspired and she truly became an inspiration until she died last year. The symbol of change is the symbol of unity and the symbol of unity is the symbol of passion, with this passion to have a better future, yellow ribbons became a symbol that until the last breath of the late President Cory, all of us prayed for her recovery and thanked God for her life. Through these yellow ribbons, the fight will continue, until the Aquinos are here, the fight will continue and through Senator Noynoy, Philippines will have a better future.
Unlike the other candidates, Senator Noynoy is different. When he was still campaigning for senatorial race, he had this ad with his mom saying that, “Kapag nangorupt ito, lagot siya sa akin”, it became his inspiration to work harder and to serve the country better. In fact, he even made a covenant on national television saying that he will not corrupt, “Hindi ako magnanakaw”, that made me feel that he is true with what he is saying. Even Senator Manuel “Mar” Roxas II step down from his candidacy because he believes with what Senator Noynoy can do in our country. When he made his first infomercial, all of us were amazed, it was truly a blast and made the circulation of the world to stop; the song “Hindi Ka Nag-Iisa” sung by Asia’s Songbird Ms. Regine Velasquez was a proof that even in the show business industry his charisma can be felt. Ironically, the infomercials of Senator Manny were contradicting, spending millions of pesos just to say that he is the, “Tunay na Mahirap” per se is such a funny thing! Comparing his infomercials with my bet would determine who’s saying the truth and who truly deserves to be the next president. But as usual it is up to the majority of the voting population of our country who they would vote and I hope that this election, the one who really deserves the seat would win and the reason for his/her victory is not because of his/her infomercial or campaign paraphernalia but because Filipino really wanted that person to start the change and improved our country’s government system. Lastly, the presidency is just a position but the responsibility to have a better future not only relies on the president but to all the Filipinos, because we are all one family.
